Unlocking the Mistmare and every mount appearance
The quest before the Horse Statue, the Essence costs that follow, and the animals that can replace the Mistmare on screen.
The short answer
Finish Upgrade Hayden’s Barn, sleep to begin the weathervane sequence, then visit the Horse Statue in The Narrows with 100 Essence. This unlocks the Mistmare. The statue also sells three mount perks, including Nice Ride, which adds owned adult cows, horses, sheep and alpacas at five hearts.
The four steps to your first mount
The mount quest waits behind Upgrade Hayden's Barn. That town project asks for 500 Stone, 400 Wood, 8 Iron Ingot and 4,000 tesserae. Put the materials in the donation box at Sweetwater Farm, then speak to Adeline while carrying the money.
AdelineAfter the repair scene, sleep. The next setup leads to Find the Weathervane, which sends you into The Narrows. The Horse Statue is on the western side of the area, beside the missing weathervane. Its position is marked on the Narrows page.
Offer 100 Essence at the statue. The scene that follows unlocks the Mistmare as your default mount. You do not need to buy or raise a horse first. The mount reference keeps the four steps and their links in one place.
Which Horse Statue perk to buy first
The Mistmare works before you buy any of the three perks. The upgrades change speed, harvesting and available appearances:

Buy Harvest Horse first if you want the mount to shorten a harvest day. Choose Nice Ride first when changing the mount is the goal. All three cost 595 Essence, or 695 including the first Mistmare offer.
Riding one of your own animals
Nice Ride covers four species: cows, horses, sheep and alpacas. The animal must be yours, fully grown and at five hearts or more. Open the Animals section of the journal, select the Mistmare and change its appearance there.
Only animals you currently own and that meet those conditions belong in the selector. If a five-heart cow is missing, check that it is an adult and that Nice Ride has been bought at the Horse Statue. The animals page shows heart thresholds and every appearance.
The two giant chicken appearances
The white and golden giant chickens follow a separate route. Unlock all six chicken color tiers, receive the Big Egg from the Chicken Statue, then use the egg. Both appearances become mount choices without Nice Ride.
Big EggSeasonal colors count toward the six-tier chicken requirement, so this route connects directly to breeding. Use the animal coat calculator to check which parent tiers can produce the missing tier before another season ends.
If the mount quest has not started
Check the chain in this order:
- Finish every stage of Upgrade Hayden's Barn, including the final conversation with Adeline.
- Sleep after the repair scene. The weathervane setup happens through the overnight sequence.
- Follow Find the Weathervane into The Narrows and inspect the Horse Statue.
- Bring 100 Essence. Finding the statue alone does not unlock the Mistmare.
The quest does not require you to own a horse or reach five hearts with an animal. Those conditions apply only to alternate appearances after Nice Ride.
