Romance

Twelve villagers can be romanced. Here is how a relationship starts, how to unlock every date, what a proposal costs, and which child each partner brings.

Who you can romance

Twelve residents can be romanced. Everyone else — Olric and Josephine among them — can be befriended to ten hearts, but the romantic option never appears in their scenes, and there is no way to date, marry or raise a child with them.

How a romance starts

  1. Reach eight hearts

Eight hearts is 1,125 heart points. Daily conversation and gifts they love get you there; nothing else about romance unlocks before it.

  2. Take the romantic option in their eight-heart scene

At eight hearts a cutscene plays. It ends on a choice, and one reply is the romantic one. Choose it and you are dating.

  3. Let Elsie explain dating

A day after you start dating and finish that villager’s eight-heart storyline, Elsie comes to the farm and walks you through dates, handing over your first inspiration items.

Dates

Dates are the heart of a romance and the part players ask about most. Each one is a scene at a specific place, unlocked by its own inspiration item.

When you can go on a date

  • Weekends only — Saturday and Sunday.
  • One date per day in total, however many people you are dating.
  • Six days before the same partner can be invited again, so once a weekend each.
  • Two partners can share a weekend: one on Saturday, the other on Sunday.
  • Festivals take the day, so a festival weekend costs you the slot.
  • Dating, engaged and married partners are all eligible. Marriage does not end dates.

What a date is worth

ActionHeart pointsHow often
A date+60Once a weekend, per partner
A gift they love+20Once a day
A gift they love, on their birthday+40Once a year
A gift they like+10Once a day
Talking to them+7Once a day

A date is the largest single jump in the game — three loved gifts in one afternoon. It does not replace daily gifting, though: gifts come back every day and dates do not, so a full week of loved gifts outweighs one date. Do both. The game’s own tutorial notes that dates will overtake gifting in a future update, once the heart cap rises.

Every date and how to unlock it

Each date is opened by using its inspiration item once. The item is then spent, and that date stays available for every partner from then on.

The Beach, Gem Cutting and Park items cannot drop at all until Elsie’s tutorial has given you your first date. Fishing the Beach or opening mine chests before that is wasted effort. Each also stops dropping the moment you hold it, so you never end up with a spare.

Dates you never have to ask for

Three more dates exist that are never in the invitation menu. They happen at events instead, they do not use up a weekend slot, and each still awards its own photo — worth knowing if you are collecting the full set for your walls.

There are 9 photos in total, one per date type — so taking each kind of date once, with whoever you like, collects the whole set. Going on a date type you have already done with a different partner gives you another copy of that same photo, titled with their name.

Getting married

What a proposal needs

  • Ten hearts with them.
  • You are already dating them.
  • An Engagement Ring in hand.
  • You are not already engaged or married.
  • Blacksmithing level 30, to forge the ring.

The ring is forged, not bought

Engagement Ring

No shop sells one. The recipe arrives through a cutscene, and the ring is made at the forge from these materials. Proposing consumes it.

Choosing the day

Once they say yes, you pick the wedding day from a calendar. It has to land between 5 and 14 days after the proposal, and it cannot fall on a festival or on your own birthday.

How many people can you date at once?

As many as you like. There is no cap — the game’s own dating tutorial says so outright. Only one of them can be married, though, and the moment you get engaged, everyone else you were dating becomes a Best Friend and is remembered as an ex. If you would rather that did not happen, the game has a Disable Break-ups setting.

You are not limited to Dating one person, but keep in mind that you will only be able to marry one.

Can you get divorced?

No. There is no divorce, separation or spouse-swapping mechanic in the game at all. The only relationship that ever ends on its own is the automatic move from Dating to Best Friend when you get engaged to someone else — so decide before you propose, not after.

Children 12

Each partner brings one child, so which child you can raise is decided by who you marry. Twelve partners, twelve children.

How this works

Getting to eight hearts

Romance runs on the same hidden heart-point pool as ordinary friendship, so everything on the villagers page applies here too. Talking once a day is worth 7 points and a loved gift 20, and the eighth heart sits at 1,125 points — which is why the romantic scene feels so far away when you start.

The fastest route is a loved gift every day, and a loved gift on their birthday for the extra 20. If you are holding something and want to know who it suits, the gift finder answers that from the item's side.

Where date items come from

Three of the six inspiration items are world drops rather than gifts, so they overlap with things you are doing anyway. The Beach one comes from fishing at the coast, the Gem Cutting one from treasure chests in the mines, and the Park one from the dig spots on the Eastern Road.

None of them can appear before Elsie's tutorial, so there is no point farming early. Once she has handed you the first date, they start dropping on their own while you play normally.

Planning around the weekend

Because dates are limited to Saturday and Sunday and each partner has a six-day cooldown, the practical ceiling is one date per partner per week — two partners fill a weekend exactly. Festivals take the day, so check the calendar before counting on a particular weekend.

Marriage does not close any of this off. A spouse can still be invited out, and the Bathhouse date remains a full health and stamina refill every time you take it.
