House upgrades, bag space and storage
Four house tiers, two bag upgrades and three sizes of chest — plus one rule about chests that most players never find on their own.
The short answer
The house has four upgrades, bought from Ryis at the Carpenter’s Shop and applied instantly: 5,000g, 15,000g, 25,000g and 50,000g, each with materials on top. Your bag starts at ten slots and reaches thirty through two Bag Upgrades at the General Store. Chests come in 30, 42 and 54 slots — and crafting pulls materials out of every chest you own, wherever it is.
The four house upgrades
All four are bought from Ryis at Carpenter's Shop, and every one of them is applied the moment you pay. There is no construction time and no builder to wait for.
| Upgrade | Gold | Materials | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | 5,000g | 500 Wood, 500 Stone | A much larger main room |
| Second | 15,000g | 500 Wood, 500 Stone, 20 Iron Ingot | A room to the west |
| Third | 25,000g | 500 Wood, 500 Stone, 20 Silver Ingot | A room to the east |
| Second floor | 50,000g | 200 Hard Wood, 100 Refined Stone, 30 Gold Ingot | An upstairs |
Only the last one has a prerequisite: you need the third upgrade already built and the quest that rebuilds the carpenter’s shop completed.
The second floor also needs a way up, which is sold separately. House Ladder is 1,000g, House Stairs is crafted at woodcrafting level 10 from 50 Hard Wood, and Teleportation Circle costs 8,000g at Wheedle's Stall if you would rather not give up the floor space. Once the upstairs exists, Ryis will also restyle the outside of the house for 5,000g.
No house tier is required to marry anyone or to have a child. A proposal wants ten hearts, an engagement ring and an existing relationship, and nothing about your house at all — the full requirements are on the romance page.
Getting past ten inventory slots
You start with ten, and there are exactly two upgrades, both at General Store and both worth +10 slots:
- Bag Upgrade, 1,000g, in stock from the beginning
- A second one, 2,000g, which appears once the general store has been rebuilt
Thirty slots is the ceiling. There is no third pouch, no renown reward and no other route, so plan your storage around thirty rather than hoping for more later.
Which chest to build
Chests come in exactly three capacities, and the cheapest one is available from your very first day.
| Slots | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| 30 | Basic Wood Chest — 30 Wood at woodcrafting level 4, and you already know the recipe. One colour is also on the shelf at General Store for 250g |
| 42 | Stone Storage Chest and a few others, all crafted; the stone one wants 50 Stone, 2 Copper Ingot and 2 Monster Fang at woodcrafting 10 |
| 54 | Deluxe Storage Chest at 10,000g from Wheedle's Stall, which is the only one you can simply buy. The craftable 54-slot chests sit at woodcrafting 38 and above |
A Shipping Bin holds 30, and it behaves differently from every other container — see below.
For most of a playthrough the answer is simply “more basic wood chests”. Thirty wood for thirty slots is by far the best ratio in the game, and the expensive chests buy you floor space rather than capacity.
The storage rule that changes how you play
This is the single most useful thing on this page, and the game never mentions it.
Crafting pulls ingredients out of your chests as well as your bag — from every chest you own, anywhere on the map.
There is no distance limit. A recipe checks your inventory first, then every chest you have placed, wherever it is, and takes what it needs. You never have to carry materials to the station.
Two qualifications:
- It is on by default for every chest you place, and each chest has its own toggle if you want to keep one aside.
- Shipping bins are excluded, as is the donation box at a construction site. Nothing you put in a shipping bin will be quietly consumed by a recipe.
Chests also have a manual sort button and can each be given a category icon, which is worth doing once you have more than three or four. What does not exist is any automatic sorting or quick-stack: nothing moves between containers unless you move it.
Raising your maximum stamina and health
Both start at 100, and both are raised by a consumable rather than by any building or perk.
Stamina Up adds +20 maximum stamina permanently. Seven of them exist and all seven are town rank rewards, one at each rank from level 10 through level 70, taking you from 100 to 240. They are not sold anywhere and no quest gives one.
Heart Crystal adds +20 maximum health the same way. Five come from story cutscenes along the seal questline, taking you from 100 to 200.
Since every point of stamina is one more tile you can till, and a charged mistril tool costs 54 in a single swing, the town rank track is effectively a tool-efficiency track too. What each renown level pays is on the skills page alongside the perks it unlocks.
Farm buildings work differently
Coops, barns and greenhouses are not bought finished. You buy a blueprint at Carpenter's Shop, place a construction site on your farm, drop the materials into the box that appears there, and the building goes up immediately.
| Building | Blueprint | Materials | Needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small coop | 1,500g | 75 Wood, 50 Stone | — |
| Small barn | 2,000g | 100 Wood, 75 Stone | — |
| Medium coop or barn | 3,000–4,000g | 100–125 wood, 75–100 stone | Ranching 20 |
| Large coop or barn | 6,000–8,000g | 125–150 wood, 100–125 stone | Ranching 40 |
| Small greenhouse | 50,000g | 20 Refined Stone, 20 Glass, 20 Hard Wood | Carpenter’s shop rebuilt |
| Large greenhouse | 100,000g | 40 of each of the same three | Carpenter’s shop rebuilt |
The greenhouse is the expensive one, and what it actually buys you — season-free planting that still needs watering — is explained in watering, seasons and sprinklers. How many animals each building holds, and what they eat, is on the ranch animals page.
