Diving spots and fish traps, explained

The two passive fishing systems: what dive spots give you for free, and how fish traps catch fish while you do something else.

The short answer

Dive spots sit in rivers and the ocean, cost no stamina to pick up, and yield shells, clay, glass, frogs and artifacts. Fish traps are placed objects that catch a small set of fish over time. Both are the only source of several museum items, so they are worth checking daily.

Dive spots: free pickups in the water

Dive spots are the glowing pickups you can grab while standing near water. Unlike casting, they cost no stamina — you just walk up and collect. Each active fishing spot spawns one or two dive pickups a day, and 34 fishing spots across the map are active (fishing guide has the spot list).

What they drop falls into three buckets:

  • Shells and beach goods — the pink scallop, sand dollar and similar items that complete the beach forage sets.
  • Clay, glass and fibre — crafting materials that are otherwise farmed by breaking rocks.
  • River and ocean creatures — frogs, crayfish, freshwater oysters, clams and the occasional fish.

About 42 different items come from dive spots, and several of them (the frog, the oyster, the bullfrog) are otherwise hard to find. The fish page marks every item’s retrieval type, so you can see at a glance which museum slots need a dive run.

Fish traps: passive fishing

Fish traps are placeable objects that catch a fixed set of fish over time: amberjack, blue crab, hake, sea urchin and the bait thief. They run while you are off doing something else, which makes them the efficient way to bank those species without standing at the water.

Two practical notes:

  • Check traps daily. They hold a limited number of catches and stop when full.
  • Bait is the input. Traps consume common bait, which is also what the rods use — the fishing guide covers how bait works for both.

Why these two matter for the museum

The fish wing and the ocean forage sets both include items that only come from dive spots or traps. A player who fishes but never dives will find the fish museum stuck at a specific set, and the missing items are almost always the dive-only ones. The museum guide lists every set and its members, so you can check which dive or trap item you are missing.

A daily diving routine

Add this to the end of a fishing session:

  1. Walk the riverbank in town and the beach, grabbing every dive spot you see.
  2. Collect shells first — they are the only source of several forage items, and forage respawns daily.
  3. Drop a trap in the water at the start of the day and collect it at the end.
  4. Bank any new item for the museum before selling (museum guide).

Diving is the lowest-effort collection system in the game: no stamina, no timing, just a walk past the water — and it is the only way to finish several museum sets.
