Renown and town rank, from Wood to Mistril

What renown is for, the three ways it comes in, and the eleven ranks that unlock the game\u2019s shops and upgrades.

The short answer

Renown runs from level 0 to 100, with a rank every ten levels — Wood, Stone, Copper, Ruby, Iron, Sapphire, Silver, Emerald, Gold, Diamond, and Mistril at the cap. It comes from shipping sales, museum donations and quests; quests pay over half the total, so the request board is the fastest lever.

What renown is for

Renown is the game’s progression currency for the town itself. Every ten levels raise your town rank, and each level pays a reward — alternating gold with items and outfit pieces, and closing each ten-level band with a stamina or essence upgrade. Most shops and buildings unlock against these ranks, so renown is the true gate on the game’s content.

The renown page shows the complete ladder: all 100 levels, the 11 ranks, and every reward.

The three sources

Renown comes from exactly three places:

SourceAmount
Shipping bin sales1 point per 100g sold, once per day
Museum donationsthe item’s own value, or 5 if it has none
Quest completionthe quest’s renown reward

The shipping conversion is applied to the day’s total takings and rounded up — so even a single fish sold earns at least 1 point. Museum donations pay 5–25 for the valuable finds (museum guide).

Why quests are the fastest route

Quests pay 9,420 renown in total across all 374 quests — over half of the 18,006 needed for the cap. Almost every request-board errand pays 20 renown, and the board offers a fresh random request every day alongside the fixed ones. The request board guide explains the daily rhythm.

In practice this means: sell something daily, donate duplicates to the museum, and treat the request board as a daily errand list. Quests alone can carry you most of the way.

At every tenth level from 10 to 90, a rank-up quest starts, asking you to reach the next rank — the game pushes you forward rather than waiting for you to find the path.

The endgame numbers

Reaching level 100 takes 18,006 renown in total, and the level costs rise gently — level 1 costs 20, level 100 costs 356. The last rank, Mistril, is only reached at the cap, so the final stretch is the longest single push in the game. The renown page has the full cost table, and the 1.0 update page notes the cap was raised to 100 in the release.

A sustainable renown routine

  1. Ship every day, even a single fish — the 1-point floor adds up over a season.
  2. Do the request board daily. 20 renown per errand, and many take items you already have.
  3. Donate before selling. A duplicate artifact or fish pays renown in the museum and gold if sold — the museum wins on progression (museum guide).
  4. Chase the rank-up quests. They are free renown on a deadline; complete them as they appear.
