The Seed Maker, and whether it is worth it
What the Seed Maker grinds, how many seeds you get back, and why regrowing crops turn it into a money machine.
The short answer
The Seed Maker, bought at the upgraded General Store for 2,000g, turns one harvested crop into 1–3 seeds of that crop. On regrowing crops this roughly doubles your income per tile: the crop keeps producing anyway, and the seeds sell for more than the crop itself.
What it does
Seed Maker is a placeable object, not a crafting station — buy it for 2,000g from General Store after that shop is upgraded (a story quest), then place it on your farm. Put a harvested crop or forageable into it and it grinds the item into 1–3 seeds of the same crop, averaging about two.
Not every item is accepted. Some wild herbs and flowers refuse to grind, and the machine never tells you which — so the practical rule is to try things and keep a list of what works.
Why regrowers turn it into a money-maker
The trick the community found quickly is to feed it regrowing crops. A strawberry plant produces fruit all season; feed those fruit to the Seed Maker and you get strawberry seeds that sell for 150g each in the bin — two seeds average 300g, versus the 125g the fruit itself would bring. The plant keeps producing either way, so every harvest becomes a choice between selling the crop or selling its seeds.
The same logic applies to the other regrowers: Pea Seed, Corn Seed, Tomato Seed, Cranberry Seed, Onion Seed and Snow Peas Seed all cost 300g a seed, so two seeds out of one harvest are worth more than any of their crops in the bin.
The crops page lists every regrower with its exact bin price, so you can check the margin for a specific crop before committing a season to it.
Where the wilds matter
The Seed Maker also accepts some forageables, which is how you turn one-time finds into plantable seeds. Garlic, rosemary and similar cooking herbs are the useful ones: they are needed in recipes all year, and the seeds let you grow your own instead of waiting for forage respawns. The foraging guide covers which wild items come back and how often.
What it is not good at
Three honest limits:
- Single-harvest crops. Grinding a turnip gives you turnip seeds worth 12g in the bin — the crop itself bins for 40g. The Seed Maker loses money on anything that does not regrow.
- Space and time. The machine takes one item at a time and produces instantly, but filling and emptying it is a chore. It shines on high-value regrowers, not on bulk processing.
- Economy balance. It is widely considered the strongest money-maker in the game and may be rebalanced later. If you want a gentler game, sell crops directly; the Seed Maker is optional.
The bigger picture
For most players the Seed Maker is a late-spring purchase, once the General Store is upgraded and the first regrower harvest lands. Combined with a greenhouse full of regrowers, it turns the farm into the strongest income source in the game — the greenhouse guide explains that pairing, and the money guide puts it in context with fishing, mining and cooking.
